Think Before You Post: Oversharing Travel Plans Can Invite More Than Likes

You may be out on vacation, but your followers aren't

As summer travel ramps up, many of us are eager to share vacation photos, countdowns, and check-ins on social media. But oversharing can put your personal security at risk.

Posting your travel plans publicly—like announcing you're “off to Europe for two weeks!”—can alert criminals that your home is empty. Combined with other publicly available information (like your address from past doxxing incidents, data breaches or old posts), this creates an open invitation for break-ins or identity theft.

Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Avoid posting real-time updates about your location

  • Wait until you return home to share photos and stories

  • Limit the audience of your posts—use private groups or close friends lists

  • Disable geotags and check-ins on social media platforms

  • Be cautious about tagging others who may also be away from home

Remember: privacy is protection. Enjoy your vacation—just don’t advertise it to the world in real time.
